Green is the New Black

The U.S. environmental movement conjures up images of electric cars and solar-powered homes. Al Gore, too. But fashion retail? Yes, say industry experts, as a growing list of fashion-savvy companies embrace green products. Retail giant American Apparel, lauded for years for its labor practices, has jumped on the solar-powered bandwagon by manufacturing all its clothing in one downtown Los Angeles location, thus reducing the environmental impact of its clothing production. The production method reduces travel time between its plant and stores, which saves gas and helps reduce carbon emissions, industry experts say.

Feel Good Fashion

The latest bona fide fashion trend doesn’t feature cashmere or black nylon, but the environment.
What started as a trickle only a few years ago has turned into a groundswell, as more of fashion’s biggest names begin to spin socially conscious clothes, which increasingly use organic fiber when available and bring sustainable manufacturing to Third World countries. Guess Inc. will jump on the green bandwagon with the upcoming launch of eco-friendly denim and tops.

Web Shopping

An increasing number of the world’s online population is using the internet to make purchases, according to a new study by Nielsen Global Online Study. Over 85 percent of the world’s Web population has made a purchase, a spike of 40 percent over the last two years, according to the study. The most popular internet-purchased items remain books, at 42 percent, but fashion shopping, in second place with 36 percent, represents the fastest-growing Web buys.
