Employment Cost Trends Home Page

The National Compensation Survey produces quarterly indexes measuring change over time in labor costs, Employment Cost Index (ECI), and quarterly data measuring level of average costs per hour worked, Employer Costs for Employee Compensation (ECEC).

Compensation costs up 0.8% Dec 2019 to Mar 2020 and up 2.8% over the year ending Mar 2020

Compensation costs rose 0.8 percent for civilian workers, seasonally adjusted, from December 2019 to March 2020. Over the year, compensation rose 2.8 percent, with wages and salaries rising 3.1 percent and benefit costs increasing 2.1 percent.

Private industry compensation costs average $34.72 per hour worked in December 2019

Wage and salary costs for private industry workers averaged $24.36 per hour worked and benefit costs averaged $10.37 in December 2019. Supplemental pay costs were $1.19 per hour worked, accounting for 3.4 percent of total compensation costs.
